On Sunday (September 22), Afghanistan batter Rahmat Shah was run out in bizarre fashion against South Africa as the ball deflected twice, including once off his own body, before hitting the stumps to catch him short of his ground.
In the third and final ODI of the sides' bilateral series in Sharjah, Afghanistan chose to bat first in a dead rubber, having won the first two matches of the series.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Abdul Malik got their side off to a steady start, before the latter was trapped in front by Lungi Ngidi in the seventh over, bringing Rahmat Shah to the crease. But just 14 balls later, he would depart in bizarre fashion.
Off the fifth delivery of the ninth over, Gurbaz hit a shot down the ground, attempting to get it past Ngidi. The ball bounced up after having been dug into the turf, and the bowler made a grab for it.

Ngidi could not collect cleanly though, and only ended up deflecting it to his right, where Rahmat, the non-striker, had taken a start. After Ngidi had aleady deflected it once, the ball went on to catch Rahmat on the shoulder as he turned away. But after hitting him, the ball changed direction once again to knock the bails off at the non-striker's end.
As Ngidi had already touched the ball, Rahmat was liable to be dismissed run out and had to walk back as he was short of his ground. The wicket had shades of the dimissal of Andrew Symonds against Sri Lanka in 2006, when the batter smashed the ball straight onto his non-striker Michael Clarke, and the ball popped up to the fielder at mid-on for a simple catch.
