The first One Day International (ODI) match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in the 2023 series will take place on June 2, Friday, at Hambantota. The series consists of three matches and will be played over a span of five days from June 2 to June 7. All the matches will be held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Sri Lanka.
Afghanistan has secured a direct qualification for the upcoming ODI World Cup, which will take place later this year. On the other hand, Sri Lanka did not manage to secure a position in the top eight rankings and will participate in the qualifiers starting later this month to seal a spot in the marquee event. Two teams will advance to the World Cup from the Qualifiers, which will also see Ireland, West Indies, Zimbabwe and the Netherlands battle it out with five Associate nations for two places.
Hashmatullah Shahidi will captain the Afghanistan team. IPL star players. Rashid Khan will miss the first two games due to a lower back injury, but he is expected to make a comeback for the final ODI on June 7.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, is led by Dasun Shanaka, who was involved in the IPL 2023 recently. Matheesha Pathirana, who helped Chennai Super Kings to the title earlier this week, is also included.
