Having missed the first match of the series in Mohali due to personal reasons, Kohli was back for the second in Indore. It was his first appearance in the format for India after the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
Rohit Sharma fell for a golden duck in the first over of the run-chase, bringing Kohli to the crease early. Chasing 173 on a flat Indore surface with small boundaries, Kohli didn’t take long to get going. His first boundary came off the second ball he faced.
Having raced to 13 off seven, Kohli was up against Naveen-ul-Haq in the fourth over of the innings. On the third ball of the over, a back of length ball outside off stump, Kohli stood tall and lofted it over the bowler’s head with an almost straight bat, much like he did on the fifth ball of the 19th over of the 2022 T20 World Cup match against Pakistan at the MCG.
The ball fell inches short of the boundary this time and went for four. Kohli, having such high expectations of himself, was visibly distraught that the shot didn’t fetch him a six like the one against Haris Rauf had in Melbourne.
Kohli hit two more cracking boundaries before being dismissed off Naveen in the sixth over. He scored 29 off 16 balls, setting up a solid platform for the middle order to build on and finish the chase, which they did. India eventually won by six wickets with as many as 26 balls to spare.
