This will be the first-ever bilateral white-ball series between the two sides, and the first series featuring more than one game. The only other bilateral encounter between the two teams was in 2018 when India played Afghanistan in the latter’s first-ever Test match.
The two sides have played each other in seven white-ball games, with all coming in either an ICC event or the Asia Cup. India will also face Afghanistan in the upcoming 50-over World Cup, on 11 October in Delhi, and can also meet them in the Asia Cup in August.
However, this will not be the first time that Afghanistan are playing a white-ball game in India, after shifting their ‘home’ venue from Sharjah to India in 2016. The Shahid Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida was considered their home ground from 2016 till 2018, after which they changed their base to the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun. The Ekana International Stadium in Lucknow was then considered as their new home ground from August 2019 after the BCCI agreed to their proposal.
The T20I series between India and Afghanistan will begin on January 11, 2024, with three games being held in the span of six days. The tour will begin in Mohali, with the second T20 International being played in Indore. Bengaluru will host the third and final game, On January 17.
The timings of the three games are yet to be announced, but they are expected to be night games.
