Australia, World Test Championship, 2023-2025
by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

The 2021-23 edition of the World Test Championship reached its conclusion at The Kia Oval, with Australia crowned champions. Here is what the schedule looks like for the next cycle of the prestigious competition, played between 2023-25.

WTC 2023-25: When does it begin?

Despite the fact that Australia only lifted the World Test Championship mace last week, the next edition is already underway. The highly anticipated Ashes series in England has kicked off the 2023-25 cycle, with the first Test in full swing at Edgbaston. The fifth Test of that series will finish at the end of July, when Sri Lanka and Pakistan will pick up the action.

This cycle’s final will be hosted at Lord’s, after The Ageas Bowl and Kia Oval hosted the previous two finals. Of the nine teams competing (all ICC Full Member nations excluding Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe), the top two at the end of the league stage will qualify for the final.

WTC 2023-25: Who is playing the most matches?

Test series in the cycle will be between two and five matches long, with points awarded for wins and losses. Each team’s position in the table will be decided by the percentage of points they have won out of those available to them.

India will play England, Bangladesh and New Zealand at home in five, two and three-match series respectively. They will also play Australia, West Indies and South Africa away from home, making it 19 matches in the cycle. England will be the busiest side of the edition, scheduled to play 21 matches across the two-year period.

The last series of the league stage will be between Sri Lanka and Australia, concluding in February 2025.
