Watch: The controversial catch by Cameron Green to dismiss Shubman Gill in the WTC final has sparked debate, with some drawing parallels to a similar grab by Kyle Jamieson that was ruled not out as he was not in “control” of the ball.

Green’s catch to send back Gill has drawn significant conversation, with clause 33.3 in the MCC’s Laws of Cricket stating that a clean catch is only taken if a fielder has “complete control over the ball and his/her own movement” before the ball touches the ground. Green grabbed the ball inches away from the turf, but controversy erupted after the ball, in the eyes of some, touched the ground after the ball entered Green’s hand.

An incident involving New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson helps to explain what is meant by being in “complete control”, with the quick denied a caught-and-bowled by the TV umpire. During the second ODI against Bangladesh, Tamim Iqbal drove a full-length ball back to Jamieson, who dived forward and took a low grab.

The catch was clean initially as his fingers were underneath the ball, but as he landed, the ball grazed the ground. TV umpire Wayne Knights ruled it not out, saying Jamieson was “not fully in control.”
