Watch: Before Marnus there was Mooney – Aussie batter settles down for mid-Test dressing room nap, gets woken up moments later

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Four years before Marnus Labuschagne was woken up from his nap because he had to walk out to bat following the fall of a wicket, Beth Mooney experienced a similar incident when her sleep was cut short after a dismissal.

During the 2019 Women’s Ashes Test match, Australia’s Beth Mooney decided to take a small nap during the first innings of the game as she awaited her batting. Slotted in at No.6 in the batting line-up, Mooney `was padded up for nearly 72 overs with Ellyse Perry and Rachael Haynes out in the middle.

A clip from the dressing room reveals how Mooney, seemingly exhausted from waiting for her turn, decided to take a nap between the game, asking her teammate Sophie Molineux to wake her up if a wicket fell and she had to go out to bat. “God, that is such a long time. Wake me up if something happens, okay Soph?”

As luck would have it, moments after Mooney had decided to doze off, Perry was dismissed for 116. Just as she had settled herself for a quick nap, Molineux uttered, “Pez [Perry] is out”. Mooney got up in a hurry, gathered her gloves and her helmet and walked out at Taunton in the 125th over.

Mooney went on to score 51 in 90 in the innings, as Australia ended with 420-8 declared.
