West Indies will not play in the 2023 World Cup, with  defeat to Scotland by seven wickets in the Super Sixes of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier confirming their fate.

West Indies have never before failed to make it to men’s Cricket World Cup. The two-time champions carried forward zero points with them from the first round of the Qualifier after they lost to both Zimbabwe and the Netherlands, going down to the latter in a Super Over finish.

To make it to India, they had to not only win all their Super Six games – against Scotland, Oman and Sri Lanka – but also hope that other results went their way. Their first game in the Super Six, however, started off in the worst possible manner, as they were shot out for 181 by Scotland, with no batter crossing 50.

West Indies got off to a dream start with the ball, dismissing opener Christopher McBride for a golden duck in the first over, but a 125-run stand between Matthew Cross and Brandon McMullen put Scotland on top, and there was no way back for Shai Hope’s side.

West Indies had to play the World Cup Qualifier after finishing ninth in the 2020-2023 Cricket World Cup Super League. The top eight teams directly qualified for the event, with two other spots being decided in the Qualifiier.

There were plenty of reactions to the defeat, another step in the steep decline of a former cricketing powerhouse. The result is rated as being one of the lowest in their cricketing history.
