Ten teams will battle for the 2023 World Cup trophy between October 5 and November 19. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the tournament opener, between England and New Zealand, as well as the final. The two semi-finals will be played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, and Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on November 15 and 16 respectively.
This is also the first time India will solely host the World Cup, after co-hosting in 1987, 1996, and 2011. Apart from Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Kolkata, matches will also be played at seven other venues – Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamshala, Hyderabad, Lucknow, and Pune.
A lot has changed for the defending world champions, England, since they won the riveting final in 2019 against New Zealand at home. They have a new captain, Jos Buttler.
New Zealand, who made it to the final in both 2015 and 2019, are the only team to have retained their captain from the last edition. Back from a long injury layoff, Kane Williamson will hope to make amends this time round for losing two consecutive finals.
Rohit Sharma will become the fourth Indian, after Kapil Dev, Mohammad Azharuddin, and MS Dhoni, to lead in a World Cup on home soil.
Injury concerns have ravaged the upcoming quadrennial event as many teams are forced to make last-minute replacements. According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), the deadline to finalise the squad is September 28.
