Watch: Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur got run out in unfortunate fashion in the T20 World Cup semi-final against Australia in Newlands.
Chasing 173 in the semi-final at Cape Town, India lost Shafali Verma (9), Smriti Mandhana (2), and Yastika Bhatia (4) in quick succession to be reduced to 28-3, but Jemimah Rodrigues (43 in 24 balls) and Kaur (52 in 34) kept them in the hunt with a 69-run stand.
After Rodrigues fell, Richa Ghosh stayed put as Kaur kept India in the hunt, smashing Georgia Wareham for consecutive boundaries in the 15th over to reach her fifty and bring the target down to 41 in 34 balls.
Kaur inside-edged Wareham’s next ball on to her pads, but could not find a run. With 41 to get from 33, Kaur swept the next ball, and Ash Gardner fielded brilliantly in the deep to prevent the boundary.
As the throw came in, Kaur seemed set to reach home for a comfortable two – until her bat got stuck in the ground while running, and Alyssa Healy whipped the bails off and appealed. As the giant screen confirmed Kaur’s dismissal, she threw her bat away in anguish, though she left words of advice for Ghosh and Deepti Sharma.
Darcie Brown soon had Ghosh caught at wide long-on, while Jess Jonassen bowled Sneh Rana in the 19th over. Australia eventually won by five runs to qualify for Sunday’s T20 World Cup final.
