Delhi Capitals set off at breakneck pace after Meg Lanning won the toss and opted to bat at WPL 2024 final at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Shafali Verma hit three sixes as the hosts raced to 64-0 after seven overs.
Verma’s first six had come off Sophie Molineux in the second over. Smriti Mandhana had taken Molineux off after that, but reintroduced her in the eighth over. Verma tried to slog sweep the first ball of the over and holed out to deep mid-wicket for a 27-ball 44.
Jemimah Rodrigues walked out and defended the next ball. The third ball kept a tad low. Rodrigues, too early in her shot, missed the ball and was bowled. Alice Capsey was bowled next ball when she attempted a paddle sweep but made no contact.
With three wickets in four balls, Molineux had rocked Delhi. Marizanne Kapp averted the hat-trick and even got a run off the last ball, but Shreyanka Patil trapped Lanning leg-before for a 23-ball 23 soon afterwards.
Sobhana Asha got Kapp and Jess Jonassen in the space of three balls in the 14th over. Delhi were bowled out for 113, with more than half their runs coming before Molineux’s triple strike.
