Australia claimed a 4-0 lead in the first game of the multi-format series, the only Test match at Trent Bridge. They won by 89 runs having bowled England out for 178 on the final morning of play. Ash Gardner claimed the second-best bowling figures ever in a women’s Test, taking 8-66 in England’s second innings.
Several injury concerns emerged for the two teams during the course of the match. Alyssa Healy revealed on day five that she had fractured two fingers in a warm up game before the Test match. In the post-match press conference she said she would continue to play through the pain in both white ball series’.
Nat Sciver-Brunt was unable to bowl for much of Australia’s second innings. She received treatment for a sore knee during the game. Kate Cross dislocated her thumb while attempting a catch on day four, but was fit to bowl shortly after having treatment on it. Alana King was also unable to bowl for a portion of the match, but her fitness to continue bowling was subsequently confirmed by Healy.
England named their squad for the T20I series this morning (June 28), with Issy Wong regaining her place and Lauren Winfield-Hill also included. Danni Gibson has also been given her first T20I call-up, while there was no place for Tammy Beaumont despite her record-breaking double-century.
