Watch: Brian Lara hits classy century against South Africa at the 1996 World Cup

by Oscar Ress 2 minute read

Brian Lara struck a characteristically classy 111 to knock South Africa out of the 1996 World Cup in Karachi.

Lara’s innings, which at one stage included five consecutive boundaries, meant the West Indies qualified for the semi-final, a game in which they were defeated by Australia.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul set the innings up with a watchful 56 before Lara took over and scored his 111 in just 94 balls which included 16 boundaries.

In response, South Africa fell 19 runs short, a loss in a knockout game that the Proteas have become synonymous with. Andrew Hudson played the Chanderpaul role with 54 before Daryll Cullinan and Hanse Cronje scored 69 and 40 respectively. Ultimately, though, it wasn’t enough.

Roger Harper took four wickets but a very economical spell form Curtly Ambrose of 1-29 did plenty for the victory push.
