West Indies v India 2023

Watch: Suryakumar Yadav plays extraordinary, trademark helicopter-whip for six in first India appearance since golden duck streak | WI vs IND

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Suryakumar Yadav, playing his first game for India since March, unfurled his trademark shot to pick up six during a sparky cameo against West Indies.

Suryakumar has not had the best run in ODIs in recent times, falling for a first-ball duck three times in a row against Australia earlier this year. His poor run continued through the start of the Indian Premier League, but he roared back as Mumbai Indians surged into the playoffs.

He ended the season with an average of 43 and a strike rate of 181, with the latter by far his fastest scoring rate across a single campaign. Suryakumar dominated the T20 game in 2022, and continued that form.

With India’s selection race for the 50-over World Cup heating up, Suryakumar supplied a timely, if brief, reminder of his talents. Promoted to bat at No.3 with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli opting to give the rest some time in the middle, he walked in inside the fifth over, glanced four off his second ball and cover drove another boundary not long after.

It was off his eighth ball that the statement stroke arrived, Suryakumar moving across his stumps and crouching as Jayden Seales delivered a shorter ball, before maneuvering his wrists to send the ball high and over the fine leg fence. He managed just one more boundary before being pinned lbw by Gudakesh Motie for 19.

India went on to secure a five-wicket win.
