Watch: West Indies debutant Alick Athanaze got the big wicket of Rohit Sharma immediately after the India captain reached his century on day two of the first Test between India and West Indies in Dominica.

In his first Test as an opener in the West Indies, Rohit scored a magnificent century, partnering with debutant and fellow Mumbai batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who created records of his own by becoming the 17th Indian to score a hundred on Test debut.

Having restricted the hosts to 150 in the first innings, Rohit and Jaiswal came out to bat and looked at complete ease for almost the entire time they were there. India ended day one on 80-0, with Rohit not out on 30 and Jaiswal on 40.

They continued in a similar, unfazed fashion on day two. Rohit played a few expansive strokes as he went further along his innings, as is the case with him normally.

He lofted both Jason Holder and Kemar Roach straight down the ground and took on the short ball as well. Jaiswal reached his hundred first, soon after India crossed 200, followed by Rohit.

West Indies were running out of options as they tried as many as eight bowlers to break the opening partnership. The one who finally came through for them was another debutant, Athanaze.

Picked primarily for his batting, Athanaze was thrown the ball in the 55th over and was tight with his lines and lengths. Rohit drove a full toss off him in the 76th over to reach his hundred and was dismissed off the very next ball.

A length ball that pitched on middle and leg from round the wicket turned and bounced sharply, beating Rohit’s forward prod and brushing his glove on the way to his pads. The ball then lobbed up around Rohit as wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva came around the stumps and the batter to grab the ball close to the ground, giving West Indies their first wicket of the innings.
