Ravindra Jadeja given out on review after DRS mix-up, with UltraEdge shown for wrong ball | WI vs IND

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Ravindra Jadeja was given out by the third umpire after reviews showed a faint edge during the second Test against West Indies, but a mix-up meant that the visuals used during the DRS video were not of the actual ball played.

On the fifth ball of the 104th over by Kemar Roach, Jadeja looked to drive a ball on the fifth stump but ended up edging to the keeper, Joshua da Silva, who immediately went up in appeal. The on-field umpire Marais Erasmus ruled it not out, but West Indies went up for the review.

TV umpire Michael Gough first viewed the entire sequence of events, and upon deciding that the ball was near the bat, requested for the UltraEdge. Here, the actual ball was shown, with Jadeja playing away from the body.

However, when the subsequent images rolled out, the images varied. Here, Jadeja’s bat was closer to his body, but the change went undetected as Gough went through the entire proceedings, assuming it to be the actual image, to rule out whether the batter had nicked the ball or not. UltraEdge showed a faint nick, and Jadeja had to depart for 61.

Commentator Daren Ganga later issued a clarification over the mismatch during the innings break, where the video of the actual delivery was shown, including the UltraEdge. Jadeja had indeed nicked the ball, and even bigger spikes were shown this time around, confirming that he would have indeed been dismissed even if the correct visuals were used in the first place.

Ganga said, “This is the right image, and the correct decision was taken in the end. That’s the most important thing. To set the record straight, it’s not the fault of the umpire or the system. It’s just a glitch.”

India, riding on Virat Kohli’s first overseas hundred in 1,677 days, were all out for 438, as they aim to sweep the series 2-0.
