Watch: Gambhir and Yuvraj’s nightmare time running between wickets in the 2011 World Cup

Gambhir Yuvraj running
by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir, two heroes of India’s 2011 World Cup triumph, had a rather nightmarish time running between the wickets in the tournament’s quarter-final against Australia, with their prolonged episode of confusion ending in Gambhir’s run-out.

In a video posted by ICC to mark the 10th anniversary of the iconic clash between the two sides at Mohali, the comical misjudgements between the two Indian star batsmen, who were clearly out of depth in the communication department, were captured.

On all occasions, it was Gambhir at the danger end. The first time, Gambhir wandered out of his crease, and almost had his stumps taken down by a bullet throw from Ricky Ponting, the non-striker’s over-eagerness clearly leaving Yuvraj unimpressed.

Three deliveries later, off the first ball of the 33rd over, Gambhir almost got run out again, responding to Yuvraj’s call for a quick single to the leg-side. After a series of ‘yes and no’ calls, both found themselves staring at Brad Haddin, who ended up throwing the ball to the wrong end and saving Gambhir, and India, from disaster.

The very next ball, Gambhir and Yuvraj had another horrendous mix-up, this time ending with Gambhir’s departure. Yuvraj tapped the ball to short third-man, following the path of the ball, oblivious that his batting partner had almost reached his end of the pitch.

When Yuvraj turned around, Gambhir was desperately trying to return to the crease, but this time, Cameron White’s throw found David Hussey, who flicked the bails, bringing an end to the miserable running.

Ardent India fans might still remember the communication breakdown. Some might have forgotten the episode completely. Either way, it makes for one more watch:
