Mumbai will play Gujarat in the final of the 2023/24 Vijay Merchant Trophy at Alur Cricket Stadium III in Alur, Karnataka, between January 17 and 20, 2024. The match will start at 9.30 am.

Named after former Indian legend Vijay Merchant, the premier Under-16 tournament in India is an inter-state competition. The 36 teams were split into five Elite Groups, with six teams each, while the Plate Group featured six teams.

Vijay Merchant Trophy: How the tournament unfolded

The top two teams from each group qualified for the knockout. The five group toppers made directly to the quarter-finals, along with the best of the five runners-up sides.

The other four second-placed teams clashed in two pre-quarter-finals. There, Delhi beat Uttar Pradesh on first-innings lead, while Tamil Nadu won a thriller against Rajasthan by six runs.

Punjab and Mumbai won their respective quarter-finals, respectively against Delhi and Rajasthan; Jharkhand beat Bengal by 49 runs, and Gujarat defeated Tamil Nadu by seven wickets.

In the first semi-final, Mumbai bowled out Punjab for 214 and 184 on either side of their first-innings score of 327, and chased down the target of 72 with nine wickets in hand. For Mumbai, Himanshu Singh claimed 4-49 and 3-48, while Raza Mirza made 112 and 49.

Jharkhand made 206 in the second semi-final and secured a 30-run lead. They then made 188, leaving Gujarat to chase 219. Reduced to 97-3 at one point, Gujarat won by six wickets, largely due to one-drop batter Yash Panjwani’s unbeaten 132.
