Tamil Nadu batter Narayan Jagadeesan smashed numerous all-time records en route to 277 – the highest List A score ever – in the 2022 Vijay Hazare Trophy fixture against Arunachal Pradesh in Bengaluru.
The double hundred eclipsed Ali Brown‘s 20-year-old List A record: the Surrey batter had scored 268 against Glamorgan in the 2002 Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy.
Jagadeesan’s knock headlined Tamil Nadu’s total of 506-2 in 50 overs, also the record for the highest total in List A history.
The 141-ball knock was Jagadeesan’s fifth List A hundred in a row – he started off with an unbeaten 114 against Andhra, before scoring 107, 168 and 128 against Chattisgarh, Goa and Haryana, before claiming the world record, all in the space of eight days.
The wicketkeeper-batter, who was released by Indian Premier League team Chennai Super Kings ahead of the 2023 IPL auction. Only three other players in the men’s game – Kumar Sangakkara, Alviro Peterson and Devdutt Padikkal – have scored four consecutive List A hundreds.
Monday was a historical day for the 26-year-old, who not only became the first to score five List A hundreds on the bounce, but also just the ninth men’s Indian batter to convert it into a double century. Overall, it was the tenth instance of an Indian men’s player getting to the landmark, with Rohit Sharma making a double ton twice.
Jagadeesan, who took 76 balls to reach his first hundred, accelerated in fine fashion, taking just 38 more balls to get to 200. He jumped to 250 off 129 deliveries, eventually ending with 277 in 141 balls with the help of 25 fours and 15 sixes – the third-most sixes in a men’s List A innings. It was also the joint-fastest double century by a male batter.
The opener now also owns the highest individual List A score, across both men’s and women’s matches. He broke Sripali Weerakkody’s record of 271* – the previous highest – made in the Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket Tournament in 2007.
Before TN’s run-fest, no team had crossed 500 in List A history. Earlier this year, England had broken Surrey’s 15-year team record when they put on 498-4 against the Netherlands.
Jagadeesan was aided by his opening partner Sai Sudharsan, who made an impressive 154 off 102 balls, with the duo sharing a record stand of 416 runs off just 232 balls. It was the highest List A partnership for any wicket, and was also the fifth successive time that the duo scored 150 or more runs together.
As expected, Jagadeesan was hailed for his record-breaking efforts.

For 20 years I have been looking at Ali Brown's 268 at the top of the list and saying "some day, some day".
Shikhar Dhawan made 248 and Rohit Sharma 264, but 268 stayed.
Then came N Jagadeesan.
