Watch: Ubaid Shah, the 17-year-old brother of Pakistan quick Naseem, dismissed the entire New Zealand top three in the Under-19 World Cup, sending off and middle stumps cartwheeling in a devastating opening spell.
Taking the new ball, Ubaid provided another example of his exciting talent. The right-armer has been one of Pakistan Under-19’s best performers in the U19 World Cup and the Asia Cup, taking six wickets in the tournament before today, including four v Afghanistan.
This may have been his most eye-catching performance yet. A timber-seeking missile flicked off the pad of opener Luke Watson to take out off-stump before a booming inswinger carved between No.3 Snehith Reddy’s bat and pad to send middle stump flying. In between, he pinned Tom Jones, the other opener, lbw as Pakistan claimed a significant early advantage.
The game is an important one, despite both teams having confirmed their places in the Super Sixes. Points against teams who progress will be carried forward, and finishing top, which the winner of this game will do, guarantees an easier Super Sixes schedule as well.
