Watch: Glenn Maxwell’s poor form continued he fell first ball during Australia’s 2024 T20 World Cup opener, against Oman.

Maxwell came into the ICC T20 World Cup on the back of a horror run at the IPL, where he made 52 runs in 10 innings at 5.78 for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (though he claimed six wickets at 21.50 apiece).

In their first match of the World Cup, against Oman at Bridgetown, Barbados, Australia batted first after Aqib Ilyas won the toss and opted to field. Bilal Khan took out Travis Head for 12, while Mehran Khan snared captain Mitchell Marsh for 14.

Maxwell joined David Warner at this stage. When Mehran pitched the ball up, Maxwell played a full-blooded cover drive, but Ilyas flung himself to his left to take an exceptional catch as Australia slumped to 50-3 after 8.3 overs. Warner (56 in 51 balls) and Marcus Stoinis (67 not out in 36) then helped Australia post 164-5.

In response, Oman were soon reduced to 57-6 before they recovered to finish on 125-9. Ayaan Khan top-scored with a 30-ball 36, while Mehran hit 27 in 16 balls. Stoinis starred with the ball as well, returning 3-19 in three overs.
