T20 World Cup final, weather update: Heavy rain forecast for England-Pakistan final in Melbourne

T20 final rain
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

The England v Pakistan T20 World Cup 2022 final could be affected by rain and thunderstorms in Melbourne, according to the latest weather reports for November 13 and the reserve day, November 14.

Rain has been the subject of significant discussion throughout the tournament, and while there were stoppages in the early phase of the World Cup – especially in Melbourne – matches have been largely disruption free in the second half. It might not be the case on the final day, with rain likely to intervene at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

What does the weather forecast look like on Sunday?

At the time of writing, the Australian Government’s Bureau of Meteorology predicts a “very high – near 100 per cent” chance of showers on November 13, the day of the final. There’s also chance of thunderstorms, “possibly severe with heavy falls” according to the meteorology website.

Temperatures are expected to hover between 16 and 26 degrees Celsius, with a possible rainfall of 10mm to 20mm predicted.

Weather.com forecast reads an 80 per cent chance of rain in Melbourne both in the morning and evening, with thunderstorms also likely. The match is set to begin at 7pm local time, with 30 minutes of extra time allocated for Sunday in case of disruptions.

As is the norm, a reserve day is allocated on Monday, November 14.

How do things look for reserve day?

The reserve day will kick into effect if the game is unable to finish on Sunday. For the knockout stages, the requirement for a completed match is a minimum of 10-overs-a-side, compared to five-a-side in the group stages. On the reserve day, the game will resume from the point it was stopped on Sunday.

It is to note that the number of additional playing hours on Monday have also been increased to four hours from the original provision of two hours. According to an ICC release on Friday, “play on the reserve day will begin at 15h00 and would be a continuation of play from the scheduled match day.”

The weather forecast, however, doesn’t look too good on Monday either.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the chance of rain on the reserve day is 100 per cent as well, although it’s predicted to be “less likely in the evening”. Possible rainfall could range between 8 to 15mm.

If the match is unable to be completed on both days (minimum 10-overs-a-side), both England and Pakistan will be declared joint winners (similar to the 2002 Champions Trophy, when India and Sri Lanka were adjudged joint winners after two rained-out final days).
