Watch: Zimbabwe wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva almost fumbled the crucial run-out off the last ball of the innings which gave his side a stunning win over Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup.
In a huge upset in Group Two, it all came down to the final ball with Pakistan needing three to win and two to take the match to a super over. Shaheen Afridi was the new man at the crease, Mohammad Nawaz having been dismissed the ball before, a crucial moment in a match which kept twisting and turning. After Nawaz plinked the ball from Brad Evans to Sikandar Raza at mid-off, Afridi had to get the job done off his first ball at the crease.
Evans bowled the ball full to the Pakistan quick, who drove down the ground without timing to the long-on fielder who ran in to field on the ring. It should only have been a single, giving Zimbabwe a historic victory. As the Pakistan batters tried desperately to come back for the second, the ball was thrown in to Chakabva behind the stumps with Afridi well short of his ground.
But, in a dramatic finish, Chakabva fumbled the ball with it ending up on the ground and giving Afridi hope of getting home for a super over. Fortunately for the Zimbabwe team, he managed to gather the ball and take the bails off before Afridi could get home and was mobbed by his teammates in celebration. It was an epic result for Zimbabwe who celebrated wildly on the field and in the stands. It is their first win outside of the Group Stage at an ICC T20 World Cup.
Pakistan were left miserable, suffering their second straight final over defeat of the competition after Virat Kohli’s monumental effort in their first Super 12 match. With South Africa and India both claiming further wins today, they will now struggle to make the knockout stages. For Zimbabwe, their win has put them right in the mix in Group Two, having claimed three points from their first two fixtures after they shared points from a wash-out against South Africa.
