Watch: Shakib Al Hasan became embroiled in a heated discussion with the onfield umpires during Bangladesh’s must-win T20 World Cup clash against Pakistan, after an attempted review of an lbw decision was turned down due to the 15-second timer rule.

Bangladesh went on to lose by five wickets with 11 balls to spare, knocking them out of the competition and seeing Pakistan qualify for the semi-finals.

The moment of controversy came in the 12th over of the chase, with Bangladesh rallying after dismissing Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam in consecutive overs. Two balls after the Rizwan wicket, Bangladesh thought they had another, Ebadot Hossain striking Mohammad Nawaz on the pad and appealing vociferously.

Chaos ensued, with Nawaz leaving his crease as Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto fired in a throw, the ball missing the stumps and flying away for four overthrows. Shakib attempted to review the lbw decision, but was told by the umpire’s he had missed the 15-second cut-off and denied the chance to go upstairs.

Shakib then had a lengthy, heated conversation with the umpires over the judgment, also throwing his cap to the ground in anger at the overthrows. It was the second moment of umpiring controversy involving Shakib in the game, with the Bangladesh captain given out lbw despite UltraEdge showing a spike as the ball passed his bat.

Clause 3.2.2 of Appendix D of the T20 World Cup playing conditions deal with how quickly a player must review a decision: “The total time elapsed between the ball becoming dead and the review request being made shall be no more than 15 seconds. The bowler’s end umpire shall provide the relevant player with a prompt after 10 seconds if the request has not been made at that time and the player shall request the review immediately thereafter. If the on-field umpires believe that a request has not been made within the 15 second time limit, they shall decline the request for a player review.”

It is important to note that the 15 seconds starts from when the ball goes dead, not from when the appeal is turned down. It is not clear whether Shakib was prompted after 10 seconds.

Shakib has form for reacting in an incensed manner to umpiring decisions. In a Dhaka Premier League clash in 2021, he kicked the stumps out of the ground in anger after an lbw appeal was turned down.
