Watch: Shaheen Afridi takes ‘incredible’ catch but goes off injured in T20 World Cup final turning point

Shaheen's injury seemed to turn the game on its head
by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Watch: Shaheen Shah Afridi took an excellent catch to dismiss Harry Brook. That, though, came at a cost and turned the tide of the T20 World Cup final completely.

England had gotten off to a decent start and at the half-way mark, required 61 runs off 60 balls. Pakistan, however, started applying the squeeze thereafter. In the 13th over, their efforts bore fruit. Brook timed a drive sweetly, but straight to long off, where Shaheen judged the catch to perfection and held onto the chance. Almost everyone supporting Pakistan broke into celebration. Soon, though, it became clear that Shaheen had injured himself while going for the catch.

His teammate immediately signalled to the physio to attend to the pacer. Shaheen, to his credit, tried to bowl the 16th over. Unfortunately, after just one delivery, he had to hobble off the field, much to the disappointment of those clad in green. Shaheen’s inability to bowl turned the tide of the game completely. The 16th over had to be bowled by Iftikhar Ahmed, who was smashed for a four and a six off the last two balls. Moeen Ali then hit Mohammad Wasim for two boundaries and ensured that England crossed the finish line.
