For the Netherlands, while their semi-final hopes were over, wins for them, Pakistan and India would guarantee them fourth place in group, giving them automatic qualification for the next T20 World Cup.

When Netherlands beat the Proteas in a significant upset, they exchanged thumbs up and smiles with Pakistan. “Make sure you win so we finish fourth,” Tom Cooper could be heard saying.

Pakistan did win, giving Netherlands 2024 T20 World Cup hopes a significant boost.
