Watch: David Warner brought out the switch hit against Afghanistan but was left with egg on his face after being outwitted by Naveen-ul-Haq.
Australia had rattled along to 50-1 after 5.1 overs and had maximised the powerplay to a large extent. Warner, too, had gotten off to a brisk start and had scored 25 off 17 balls. At that moment, though, Warner decided to be a little too funky. He pre-meditated his switch hit and changed his stance very quickly.
The bowler might have taken notice of this and pitched the ball on a length on what would have been leg stump had Warner been in his original stance. Seeing that he could not attack, Warner tried to defend but was unable to do so as the ball snuck past the bat and smashed into the top of leg stump.
Adam Gilchrist, who was on commentary, quipped, “He got funky there, did David Warner. Really funky and it has not paid off.”
Shane Watson, too, chimed in, saying, “Warner is a very skilled right-handed batter but not good enough today.”
Warner’s dismissal allowed Afghanistan to claw their way back into the game before a solid partnership between Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis got the hosts back on track.
