Watch: Gulbadin Naib was run out in a comical fashion during Afghanistan’s Super 12 match against Sri Lanka in the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Naib, who was at the non-striker’s end during the second ball of the 18th over, set off after batter Mohammad Nabi nudged Maheesh Theekshana’s delivery towards mid-wicket. The two Afghanistan players ran a single, with Naib eager for a second as well. Nabi, however, turned down the run, and Naib, who was almost mid-way down the pitch, had to retrace his steps back into the crease.
However, while turning, he slipped and also lost control of his bat in the process. In a desperate bid to get back, he did not get back up and run, seemingly to avoid wasting precious time, but decided to roll over back to safety instead. “It’s a game of roly-poly,” commentated Simon Doull.
However, Naib was unable to make his ground as the wicketkeeper whipped off the bails to run him out for a 14-ball 12.
Afghanistan lost the do-or-die clash against Sri Lanka by six wickets and have been knocked out of the tournament.
