Virat Kohli breaks T20 World Cup run-scoring record in victory over Bangladesh

by Wisden Staff 4 minute read

India are now the second-most successful team in T20 World Cup history, in terms of wins, after they recorded their 26th victory in the history of the event against Bangladesh on Tuesday.

India surpassed Pakistan following their victory, and are behind only Sri Lanka’s tally of 31 wins in the T20 World Cup. India also have a win/loss percentage of 1.857 – the best among teams who have played more than five games in the tournament. South Africa are slightly behind, with a win/loss ratio of 1.846 in the edition over the years.

The victory was led by Virat Kohli, who became the first cricketer to score three or more fifties in a single T20 World Cup on three occasions, making an unbeaten 66 in 44 deliveries. The former India skipper had smashed four fifties in the 2014 T20 World Cup and made three in 2016. With 220 runs thus far, he needs 100 more runs to break his own record of scoring the most runs by any batter in a single edition.

He also won the Player of the Match award for his contribution at the Adelaide Oval, his 15th overall in the format, and seventh in the T20 World Cup. No other player has more awards than Kohli in the competition, with the next active player on the list Shakib Al Hasan winning three Player of the Match awards.

The match also saw Kohli become the highest run-scorer in the T20 World Cup, a competition he has excelled in. Before the start of the event, the 33-year-old needed 172 more runs to surpass Mahela Jayawardene on the all-time list, the Sri Lankan making 1,016 runs in 31 matches. Kohli currently has 1,065 runs in only 23 innings, achieving his feat en route to his 13th fifty in the competition, averaging 88.75 at a strike rate of 132.46. No other player has a better average than Kohli (no filters) and no one else has made ten or more fifties in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Kohli also continued his stunning form in Australia, and in particular at the Adelaide Oval. He made his eighth fifty in the format in Australia, joint-highest with Aaron Finch and David Warner. No other player (Australians included) has more than three half-centuries in T20I cricket in Australia. Overall, Kohli averages 83.87 in T20Is in the land, at a strike rate of 144.61. It is the highest average by any player in Australia with more than one game to their name.

In Adelaide, the record is even more stunning. Kohli averages 63.62 at the ground in Test cricket, making 509 runs in four matches. In ODIs, his average at the venue is 61, with 244 runs in four games, while in T20Is, he is yet to be dismissed after two games, scoring 154 runs at a strike rate of 155.55 with two fifties. Only Finch has made more runs (190) at the Adelaide Oval in T20Is, and no other batter has made more fifties in Adelaide.

It was also an eventful day for Suryakumar Yadav, who attained the No.1 ranking in the ICC men’s T20 charts for the first time on Wednesday. He struck 30 in 16 balls, which took his competition strike rate to 180.21. He is the only player to make more than 150 runs (164 runs) and have a strike rate of more than 180 this T20 World Cup. He currently has 965 runs in T20Is in 2022, needing 35 more runs to become only the second player in the history of men’s T20Is to make more than 1,000 years in a calendar year. Mohammad Rizwan, with 1,326 runs in 2021, is the first.

Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya, who picked up two wickets apiece, have nine wickets in T20Is in Australia – the joint-highest by any bowler from India. The duo overtook Jasprit Bumrah and R Ashwin (eight wickets apiece) en route to their match-winning spell.

Arshdeep is also on the verge of owning another record. He currently needs four more wickets in this T20 World Cup to become the highest wicket-taker amongst all India bowlers in a single edition of the event. Currently, RP Singh tops the list, with 12 scalps, which he picked during the 2007 T20 World Cup. Irfan Pathan (10 in the 2007 edition) and Ashish Nehra (10 in 2010) are the only quicks with more wickets than Arshdeep in a single T20 World Cup.
