Rishabh Pant gives thumbs-up to Hardik Pandya after ‘selfless sacrifice’ of wicket gets partner on strike

Rishabh Pant gives Hardik Pandya a thumbs-up after being given run out in the India-England T20 World Cup semi-final
by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Rishabh Pant was hailed for delivering a moment of selflessness and game-awareness in India’s T20 World Cup semi-final against England, running himself out to get Hardik Pandya on strike.

Pandya, having brought up his half-century and in a destructive mood, smashed 10 runs off his next two balls as India finished their innings with a flourish.

Pant was a debated inclusion in the India XI, with Dinesh Karthik having begun the tournament as the team’s established wicketkeeper. He earned a spot for India’s final Super 12s game after Karthik had struggled with poor form, and retained his spot for the semi-final against England at the Adelaide Oval.

While Pant is yet to show what he can do with the bat, making nine runs across two innings, he did provide India with a meaningful contribution against England. Pandya was the key man in the final overs, showcasing his acceleration skills to move from 13 off 15 to 53 off 30 when Pant faced up to the third ball of the final over.

Pant tried and failed to get bat on the delivery, a wide yorker from Chris Jordan, but Pandya ran through for a bye anyway. Pant remained in his crease until Pandya was almost at the striker’s end before setting off, a move which meant England opted to go to the non-striker’s end. Pant then set off, without hope of making his ground, but ensuring that it was he who was dismissed, and that it was Pandya on strike.

Pant gave Pandya a thumbs-up as he ran from the field, and Pandya proceeded to hit a six and a four off his next two balls as India finished on 168-6.
