India v England, T20 World Cup semi final – Live updates and commentary

2022-11-10, 11:14:00, Alex Hales is Player of the Match. That is it from us today, see you for the final!

2022-11-10, 11:04:00, England win by 10 wickets with 24 balls to spare: Axar does well to keep England to two in his over. Shami resumes, Hales hits the fourth ball through extra cover for four, and Buttler ends the match by clearing long on. Match over, with four overs to spare.

2022-11-10, 10:56:00, England 154-0 (14), need 15 in 36: England are finishing this in a hurry. Shami comes to bowl, Buttler clears extra-cover for four, then lofts over long-off for six. He mistimes a slog, Surya tries but cannot latch on, and it is four.

2022-11-10, 10:51:00, England 140-0 (13), need 29 in 42: Buttler takes charge. Places the hook well to beat fine-leg for four, then pulls the next ball for six. Hardik had started the over well, but things simply fell apart in the second half of the over.

2022-11-10, 10:45:00, England 123-0 (12), need 46 in 48: Ashwin in search of some sort of miracle. Nothing of that sort happens. Hales slog-sweeps the fifth ball for six, and the sixth through extra-cover for four.

2022-11-10, 10:42:00, England 108-0 (11), need 61 in 54: Pandya’s first ball is short, Hales casually lifts it over mid-wicket for six, they spend the rest of the over picking ones and twos, ten off the over.

2022-11-10, 10:36:00, England 98-0 (10), need 71 in 60: Drinks was taken early because Pant had gone down with cramps, he is back up now. Arshdeep resumes after the break, the first ball is back of a length, but Hales has already made room. Creams past cover for four. Buttler hits the third ball back, but the shot crashes into the stumps. They need seven an over, and get that.

2022-11-10, 10:28:00, England 91-0 (9), need 78 in 66: Pandya. Buttler tries the scoop, Shami fields at deep fine-leg, deep third was running in, and for some reason, Shami lobs it over his head (safe to say, he assumed deep third had not changed his location). Pandya finishes well, just seven runs, would have been five but for that misfield.

2022-11-10, 10:23:00, England 84-0 (8), need 85 in 72: Axar bowls a rank long-hop, and pulls him over mid-wicket for six. He drives the last ball past mid-on to bring up his fifty, England need a shade over seven an over now.

2022-11-10, 10:20:00, England 75-0 (7), need 94 in 78: Ashwin. He gets the ball to turn, lovely line, Buttler and Hales are cautious against him to begin with. Then, as Ashwin tosses up the fifth ball, Hales abandons all caution to slog-sweep him for six.

2022-11-10, 10:15:00, England 63-0 (6), need 106 in 84: Axar resumes, and Hales slog-sweeps him for six, brutal hit, this. The last ball is short, and Buttler picks up four easy runs with a pull, England have virtually sealed the game inside the powerplay.

2022-11-10, 10:11:00, England 52-0 (5), need 117 in 90: Shami replaces Bhuvneshwar, and Hales lofts the second ball to clear the very long straight boundary for six. Shami responds with two good balls, but Hales bunts the fifth ball off the back foot through cover for four.

2022-11-10, 10:06:00, England 41-0 (4), need 128 in 96: Rohit is not going to wait for the powerplay to end. Axar comes on, but Buttler dispatches it over extra-cover for four, and picks up four more singles in the over.

2022-11-10, 10:03:00, England 33-0 (3), need 136 in 102: Hales goes after Bhuvneshwar. It is a slower ball, it is a long boundary, but Hales still clears the long-off fence for six. Twelve off the over, England are cruising.

2022-11-10, 09:59:00, England 21-0 (2), need 148 in 108: Arshdeep swings it into Buttler, but Buttler plays it cleverly, just opens the face of the bat, four past deep third. Arshdeep overcompensates with a wide down leg, but does better from there, eight off the over.

2022-11-10, 09:53:00, England 13-0 (1), need 156 in 114: Bhuvneshwar to Buttler, Hales at the non-striker’s end. The first ball is wide outside off, and Pant comes up to the stumps immediately afterwards. The second ball swings away from Buttler, and Buttler creams it through cover for four. Two balls later, an encore. Bhuvneshwar responds well, squaring up Buttler with one that leaves him, but Buttler flicks the last ball for four.

2022-11-10, 09:41:00, India 168-6 (20): India were 62-2 after 10 overs, but got 106 off the last 10, largely due to Pandya’s blitz. Have they done enough against an England line-up that bats up to 11?
Rahul 5(5) Rohit 27(28) Kohli 50(40) Surya 14(10) Pandya 63(33) Pant 6(4) Ashwin 0*(0) Stokes 2-0-18-0 Woakes 3-0-24-1 Curran 4-0-42-0 Rashid 4-0-20-1 Livingstone 3-0-21-0 Jordan 4-0-43-3

2022-11-10, 09:36:00, India 168-6 (20): Jordan pitches up, and Pandya goes for – and clears – the mid-wicket fence for six. The next ball is a full-toss (not a no-ball) that Pandya comfortably places between mid-wicket and square-leg for four. Pandya stands deep inside the crease, flicks the ball for four, brilliant placement but treads on to the stumps. Hardik Pandya hit wicket b Chris Jordan 63(33)!

2022-11-10, 09:34:00, India 158-5 (19.3): Jordan to bowl the last over. They get a single each, and Jordan responds with a wide yorker. Pant swings and misses, Pandya sets off for a bye, Pant has to sacrifice his wicket. Pandya gets the strike, three balls to go. Rishabh Pant run out (Jos Buttler/Chris Jordan) 6(4)!

2022-11-10, 09:28:00, India 156-4 (19): Pant walks out. Makes room outside and lofts the first ball he faces over extra-cover for four. Curran responds with a brilliant yorker, Pant squeezes out a single. Curran goes for another yorker, Pandya is standing deep in there, creams through point for four. Curran bowls a slower, Pandya lofts him into the stands over mid-wicket, that is the 150. The next ball scoots to deep mid-wicket, Stokes misfields, it is four, that is Pandya’s fifty.

2022-11-10, 09:22:00, India 136-4 (18): Jordan’s first ball is short, and Pandya pulls for six. The next ball is picked up, Pandya whips it over square-leg, that is an amazing six, terrific bat speed! Jordan responds with a bouncer, Pandya misses the hook. Kohli pushes the ball past extra-cover for two, that is his fifty. And he falls next ball, caught by a diving Rashid at short third off a wide yorker. Virat Kohli c Adil Rashid b Chris Jordan 50(40)!

2022-11-10, 09:15:00, India 121-3 (17): Curran. The first ball is short and outside off, and Pandya crunches it over extra cover, plenty of bottom hand, six. The next ball is short too, Pandya pulls, Hales pulls off a spectacular save at deep mid-wicket, they run hard for two. Pitches up the fourth ball, Pandya can only manage to hit it straight down that long boundary, two more. Curran follows it with a bouncer outside off. Eleven off the over.

2022-11-10, 09:11:00, India 110-3 (16): Jordan. The first ball is wide down leg. Pandya gets a single, and Jordan produces a brilliant yorker. Kohli tries to flick and misses and slips over, not out is the verdict, and England review. No bat, pitched in line, impact in line, but it would have brushed the stumps. Kohli survives, England retain their review. Kohli responds in style, bisects the deep cover and mid-off with pinpoint precision for four.

2022-11-10, 09:04:00, India 100-3 (15): Livingstone to bowl an extra over. The second ball is tossed up, on off stump, and Pandya hits it back so hard that neither long-off nor long-on could prevent a four. Kohli hits the last ball to the extra-cover boundary for four, ten off the over.

2022-11-10, 09:00:00, India 90-3 (14): Woakes replaces Rashid. Kohli tries to go after him, but Woakes adjusts his length, they get only a single. Pandya returns the strike, Woakes’ next ball is short, and Kohli’s cut beats short third, a long-awaited boundary. India need more of these. Woakes bounces, Reiffel calls a wide, probably for line (Pandya had shuffled, though), probably for height.

2022-11-10, 08:55:00, India 80-3 (13): A new batter at the crease, so Buttler gets Livingstone to bowl another over. He does not do anything fancy, just bowls line and length, and concedes just three.

2022-11-10, 08:53:00, India 77-3 (12): Hardik is in, India manage just two runs off the last four balls, three off that over. Rashid finishes with 4-0-20-1, what a spell this has been!

2022-11-10, 08:51:00, India 75-3 (11.2): Rashid’s first ball holds a bit, Kohli tries to flick, finds the leading edge. SKY goes for the extra-cover boundary off the next ball but cannot clear the fielder, that is a HUGE wicket for England. OUT! Suryakumar Yadav c Phil Salt b Adil Rashid 14(10)!

2022-11-10, 08:48:00, India 74-2 (11): We are back after the drinks break, England are on top, and Stokes is back. Stokes keeps taking the pace off, but the moment he bounces, SKY hooks, and the top edge flies for six. The next ball is a crunching extra-cover drive for four, he is off.

2022-11-10, 08:41:00, India 61-2 (10): SKY is here, and he sets out to pick up singles, as does Kohli. Rashid hurries through his over, just five off this one, England have definitely won the first quarter of the innings.

2022-11-10, 08:38:00, India 57-2 (9): Jordan. The first ball is short, Kohli pulls for a run. The second ball is overpitched, and Rohit stands in the crease to loft it over deep extra-cover, one bounce for four. The fourth ball is on target, and it reaches Jordan on the bounce. He goes after the fourth ball but does not time it at all, and Curran runs in from deep mid-wicket to take an excellent catch. Rohit Sharma c Sam Curran b Chris Jordan 27(28)!

2022-11-10, 08:32:00, India 51-1 (8): Rashid continues. Tosses up the third ball, Rohit goes for the slog-sweeps, they run a single. England continue to cut off the boundaries, there have been some excellent shots, but in all, just six boundaries in eight overs.

2022-11-10, 08:30:00, India 46-1 (7): Livingstone. The second ball is slightly short, and Kohli sends it flying over the bowler’s head, four runs. He gets two off the next ball from deep point, but only nine off the over.

2022-11-10, 08:27:00, India 38-1 (6): Rashid comes to bowl, Rohit sweeps the first ball for four. The last ball holds a bit on pitching, Rohit’s back-foot push is in the air but it eludes Rashid. Despite India’s hits, England have dominated the powerplay.

2022-11-10, 08:22:00, India 31-1 (5): Curran strays in line, Rohit picks it up, lovely flick through mid-wicket. Curran (probably) tries to respond with a quicker ball, but Rohit has stepped out already, he thwacks it disdainfully to the mid-wicket fence. Throws his bat at the next ball, Brook at backward point flies but cannot hold on to it, gets a run. There is a muffled appeal for leg-before off the fifth ball against Kohli, they do not review.

2022-11-10, 08:18:00, India 21-1 (4): Kohli comes to the party. Too full, and Kohli’s famous bottom hand comes into play, targets the short boundary over extra cover, delightful shot for six. There is a wide down the leg, but Woakes does well otherwise, 10 off the over despite that six.

2022-11-10, 08:14:00, India 11-1 (3): Curran replaces Stokes. Over the wicket, finds Kohli’s edge, but the ball falls short of slip. It is a nice, steady over, England are slowly pushing India into that risk-taking zone.

2022-11-10, 08:10:00, India 10-1 (2): Kohli is here. Pushes the second ball he faces to mid-wicket and sets off for a run, he is off.

2022-11-10, 08:08:00: India 9-1 (1.4): Woakes at the other end. Strays on to the pads, and Rohit flicks through mid-wicket to pick up two, then to square-leg for one. The next ball is short on off stump, Rahul tries to cut and edges, England strike! KL Rahul c Jos Buttler b Chris Woakes 5(5)!

2022-11-10, 08:04:00: India 6-0 (1): Stokes to Rahul. Short and wide (loosener alert), and Rahul cuts, and that is four. He cuts the next ball too, there is a fielder there, gets a run. Stokes alters his length, pitches them up, one more run off the over, six.

2022-11-10, 07:39:00: England – Buttler (c & wk), Hales, Salt, Stokes, Brook, Livingstone, Moeen, Curran, Woakes, Jordan, Rashid. India – Rohit (c), Pant (wk), Rahul, Kohli, Suryakumar, Pandya, Axar, Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar, Shami, Arshdeep.

2022-11-10, 07:37:00: England have won the toss and opted to bowl. They have two forced changes, induced by injuries: Salt and Jordan for Malan and Wood. India are unchanged.

2022-11-10, 07:29:00: It is a used pitch, but Shane Watson just called it a ‘ripper’. Perhaps not as slow a surface, then. Let us see.

2022-11-10, 07:24:00: Mark Wood has been ruled out of the match. It will almost certainly be Chris Jordan.

2022-11-10, 06:50:00: For India, the two major selection discussions could be about the wicketkeeper spot (Dinesh Karthik v Rishabh Pant), and whether there is space for Yuzvendra Chahal in the XI.

2022-11-10, 06:24:00: We are close to an hour away from the toss. For England, Mark Wood seems to be a near certainty to miss out, with a big question mark on Dawid Malan as well. To replace Wood, England might pick Chris Jordan.
