Watch: The MS Dhoni tactic that outfoxed Kieron Pollard in the 2010 IPL final, and was aped by South Africa 11 years later

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Temba Bavuma got the wicket of Kieron Pollard with an innovative fielding position during South Africa’s match with West Indies in the T20 World Cup, which reminded audiences of a similar tactic that had been employed by MS Dhoni during the 2010 IPL final to dismiss the same batter.

On Tuesday, Pollard smashed a slower ball from Dwaine Pretorius to Rassie van der Dussen, who had been stationed right behind the bowler. The low catch was referred to the third umpire, who decided that van der Dussen’s fingers were underneath the ball. West Indies lost their seventh wicket of the innings, as Pollard walked back for a 20-ball 26.

The dismissal, along with the unorthodox fielding position, was reminiscent of the 2010 IPL final when Chennai Super Kings-led MS Dhoni set a similar field for Pollard during the clash with Mumbai Indians. In the summit clash, the wicketkeeper kept Matthew Hayden at the edge of mid-off in the 19th over of the MI innings. Pollard fell into the trap as he hit the very next delivery by Albie Morkel down the ground, straight into the hands of Hayden, to depart for a 10-ball 27.
