‘Tired Call Mr. Ump’ – Jadeja’s remarkable running catch controversially overturned by third umpire

Jadeja catch

In an incredible display of athleticism, India’s Ravindra Jadeja clung onto what appeared to be an incredible running catch that was eventually controversially adjudged not out by the third umpire, leading to extensive debate around the decision.

Off the second ball of the 19th over in the India-Afghanistan match at the T20 World Cup, Jadeja (who also took a catch off the previous delivery), ran in from the deep to circle around Karim Janat’s aerial shot. As the ball was dropping to the ground, he leapt forward, clinging on to the ball with his fingertips, and dived to finish the catch, which was even marvelled at by the on-air commentators.

However, the third umpire was consulted to check the landing, with replays showing that a part of the ball might have been briefly in contact with the ground. Aleem Dar, on TV umpiring duty, adjudged it not out after checking from different angles, but not everyone was happy with the decision.

It’s to be noted that the soft signal was out.

Among others, Dale Steyn and Sam Billings questioned the umpire’s final decision: Steyn tweeted “Tired Call Mr.Ump”, while Billings posted “Thought that was out tbf…jadeja is ridiculous in the field!’.

On a clip posted by ICC, Stuart Broad commented “Looks out to me”.

Here’s the catch:
