The men’s T20 World Cup 2021 will be held in October and November this year – looking back at past winners of the tournament over the last six editions.

The T20 World Cup will be held across two stages – Round 1 and Super 12s, which will conclude with the semi-finals and final. Matches will be held in UAE and Oman.

Here’s the list of past winners of the T20 World Cup from 2007 to 2016.

T20 World Cup 2007

Winners: India

The inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup, then referred to as the World T20, was held in South Africa. India beat arch-rivals Pakistan in the finals by five runs.

Two other sides which made it to the semi-finals were Australia and New Zealand.

Highest run-scorer: Matthew Hayden
Highest wicket-taker: Umar Gul
Player of the Match (final): Irfan Pathan
Player of the Tournament: Shahid Afridi

T20 World Cup 2009

Winners: Pakistan

The second edition was held in England. Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in the finals by eight wickets.

Two other sides which made it to the semi-finals were West Indies and South Africa.

Highest run-scorer: Tillakaratne Dilshan
Highest wicket-taker: Umar Gul
Player of the Match (final): Shahid Afridi
Player of the Tournament: Tillakaratne Dilshan

T20 World Cup 2010

Winners: England

The third edition was held in the West Indies. England beat Australia in the finals by seven wickets.

Two other sides which made it to the semi-finals were Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Highest run-scorer: Mahela Jayawardene
Highest wicket-taker: Dirk Nannes
Player of the Match (final): Craig Kieswetter
Player of the Tournament: Kevin Pietersen

T20 World Cup 2012

Winners: West Indies

The fourth edition was held in Sri Lanka. West Indies beat the hosts in the final by 36 runs.

Two other sides which made it to the semi-finals were Australia and Pakistan.

Highest run-scorer: Shane Watson
Highest wicket-taker: Ajantha Mendis
Player of the Match (final): Marlon Samuels
Player of the Tournament: Shane Watson

T20 World Cup 2014

Winners: Sri Lanka

The fifth edition was held in Bangladesh. Sri Lanka beat India in the finals by six wickets.

Two other sides which made it to the semi-finals were South Africa and West Indies.

Highest run-scorer: Virat Kohli
Highest wicket-taker: Imran Tahir
Player of the Match (final): Kumar Sangakkara
Player of the Tournament: Virat Kohli

T20 World Cup 2016

Winners: West Indies

The sixth edition was held in India. West Indies beat England in the finals by four wickets, to lift the title a second time.

Two other sides which made it to the semi-finals were India and New Zealand.

Highest wicket-taker: Mohammad Nabi
Player of the Match (final): Marlon Samuels
Player of the Tournament: Virat Kohli
