by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: A moment of controversy proved decisive in Odisha’s match with Tamil Nadu during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, with a boundary incorrectly ruled out by the on-field umpire, and Odisha losing by one run in an Elite Group A clash on Friday, November 5.

Batting first, Tamil Nadu scored 165-5 in their 20 overs, with the help of a 28-ball 44 from Baba Aparajith. In reply, Odisha lost regular wickets and needed 71 off the last 6.3 overs with six wickets in hand. Subhranshu Senapati and Abhishek Raut shared a crucial stand of 49 runs before Tamil Nadu struck with two quick wickets. The equation boiled down to 12 needed off the last four deliveries, before T Natarajan got the wicket of Sarbeswar Mohanty to pile on the pressure on the Odisha batters.

The third ball of the over saw Bikash Rout, facing his first ball of the innings, drive a length delivery towards the covers where it was misfielded by Murugan Ashwin. The ball went on to touch the boundary rope as the spinner tried in vain to push the ball back in. However, ithout a third umpire in place, the on-field umpire signalled just one run after confirming with Ashwin.

The decision proved to be costly for Odisha who went on to lose the game by one run. The batters ran two off the fourth ball of the over before Raut smashed a huge six off the last delivery.

Head coach of the Odisha cricket team Wasim Jaffer took to Twitter to share his disappointment following the loss, but later deleted his tweet.
