The full list of fixtures for the upcoming World Test Championship series between Sri Lanka and England.
Sri Lanka Cricket and the England & Wales Cricket Board have announced the fixtures for England’s tour of Sri Lanka in early 2021. The two-Test series, that forms part of the World Test Championship, was originally scheduled to take place earlier in 2020.
England were in Sri Lanka in March and took part in a pair of warm-up games before the tour was abandoned due to the spread of Covid-19. The rescheduled series consists of two Tests, both set to take place in Galle behind closed doors.
England are set to arrive in Sri Lanka on January 3rd before training from January 5th in Hambantota, 100 kilometres east of Galle. The coronavirus situation in Sri Lanka is comparatively favourable against the United Kingdom; over the course of the entire pandemic there have been 142 confirmed Covid-19 related deaths, a figure that’s dwarfed by the UK’s figure of over 62,000.
England are currently ranked in third place in the World Test Championship table and still retain an outside shot of qualifying for next year’s final at Lord’s. Anything less than a 2-0 series win would significantly affect their likelihood of qualification. Sri Lanka are currently ranked sixth in the World Test Championship, sandwiched between Pakistan and West Indies, with a win, a draw and two losses from the four Tests they’ve contested in the competition thus far.
