England have announced a 16-strong Test squad for their upcoming two-Test series in Sri Lanka.
Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes have been rested from the tour, ahead of a packed 2021 schedule that includes a four-Test series of India, an Ashes series Down Under and the T20 World Cup.
As expected, Jonny Bairstow has been recalled, alongside fellow wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes. Both excelled on England’s last tour of Sri Lanka, with each making centuries in a 3-0 whitewash.
Rory Burns will miss the tour to attend the birth of his first child, meaning Zak Crawley is likely to resume the role of opener. Bairstow will likely slot in at No.3, with Dan Lawrence seemingly set to make his Test debut at No.5 after earning his maiden call-up.
England’s 16 is packed with bowling options, with Olly Stone, Moeen Ali and Jack Leach all recalled after last playing Tests in 2019.
Ollie Pope, who injured his shoulder during England’s Test series against Pakistan, will travel with the group to continue his rehab.
England have named a group of seven reserves, again heavily stocked with bowling options. James Bracey is the sole batting option in the septet, with spinners Mason Crane, Amar Virdi and Matt Parkinson and quicks Saqib Mahmood, Craig Overton and Ollie Robinson the others.
