At the end of the 24th over, with India at 80-3, South Africa continued with Gerald Coetzee bowling his sixth straight over. The fast bowler strayed onto Iyer’s pads with the first ball, bowling an inviting leg-stump half-volley. Iyer, without any hesitation, flicked the delivery aerially, resulting in the ball soaring over square leg for six.
Iyer arrived at the crease when India were reduced to 24-3 in the morning session and were in a spot of bother. He got off the mark in style with a boundary through midwicket off Nandre Burger before getting a reprieve in the next over as Marco Jansen dropped a dolly at point off Kagiso Rabada. Alongside Virat Kohli he steady the ship for India in a period of consolidation before both were dismissed by an on-fire Kagiso Rabada after lunch.
A snorter from Rabada castled Iyer for 31 (50) to end the 68-run stand, leaving the visitors teetering at 92-4.
