Watch: Mohammed Siraj dismissed Dean Elgar cheaply, with the South Africa opener chopping a delivery onto his stumps on the first day of the second Test between South Africa and India in Cape Town as the tourists surged back into the series.

After South Africa elected to bat first, Siraj drew first blood for India by dismissing Aiden Markram for 2 (10) in his second over of the day. India had been beaten by an innings in the first Test and quickly set about making amends.

Siraj came on to bowl his third over of the day with Elgar on strike and started with two dots. Elgar saw an opportunity to break the shackles off the third delivery as he tried to play a cut through the off-side, but the lack of room led to his undoing. He chopped the ball onto his stumps, sending him packing for 4 (15). Siraj was ecstatic as he ran towards his teammates in celebration.

India would be happy to cheaply dismiss Elgar, playing his last Test, given his tendency to be a thorn in their flesh in recent years. At Centurion, Elgar’s 185 off 287 balls was instrumental in South Africa winning the first Test by an innings and 32 runs.

Siraj continued to breathe fire in the morning session, scalping four wickets more in a nine-over spell, ending with career-best figures of 6-15. As a result, the hosts were bowled out for 55 before lunch, recording the lowest total against India in a Test match.
