South Africa v England 2020: SA announce 24-man squad for England white-ball series

South Africa have announced a 24-man squad for the upcoming limited-overs home series against England, including uncapped seamer Glenton Stuurman for the ODIs and T20Is.

The squad, led by Quinton de Kock, includes fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who had not been included for South Africa’s tour of India, their last international assignment earlier this year, owing to a groin injury.

Stuurman, 28, who has been playing first-class cricket since 2013, received his maiden South Africa call-up. He was the leading wicket-taker in Cricket South Africa’s 3-day Provincial Cup in 2018/19, picking up 39 wickets in eight games.

Expectedly, there was no spot for veteran AB de Villiers in the squad – there had been chatter around de Villiers’ possible international comeback ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup, but there have been no concrete talks over a re-entry, even though de Kock had hinted at a return earlier this year.

Imran Tahir, who retired from ODI cricket after the 2019 World Cup but remains available for T20I cricket, is not part of the list, neither is Aiden Markram, who hasn’t played a T20I since March 2019, and an ODI since last year’s World Cup.

Graeme Smith, CSA’s director of cricket, said that the teams were put together ahead of an important season, which includes series against India as well as the 2021 T20 World Cup. “This is an important season for the team, with an ICC T20 World Cup coming up late next year in India,” Smith was quoted as saying by CSA. “I’m sure that the T20 series in particular, is going to boast some explosive performances for cricket fans to enjoy at home. An ODI series against the reigning World Champions will always bring a level of excitement of its own. I’m looking forward to an exciting return to international cricket for our Proteas.”

The tour, starting November 27, is scheduled to feature three T20Is followed by as many ODIs, and will be England’s first international tour following the Covid-19 pandemic.
