While plenty of England’s batsmen had reasons to be disappointed with their dismissals on the first day of the second Test against South Africa, none prompted as much mirth as Stuart Broad.

With the second new ball just two overs old and in the hands of Kagiso Rabada, plenty of more qualified batsmen might have struggled, and Broad’s batting has tailed off to the extent that seeing his stumps rearranged is a regular occurrence. But if getting out was excusable, the location of his bat as he did caused laughter in the commentary box.

“Stuart is looking to get the ball away into the leg side maybe expecting the short delivery or trying to get onto the off stump, but I think his bat gets trapped in his back pad,” said Shaun Pollock as Kevin Pietersen chuckled in the background.

“I haven’t seen it before… It gets stuck in his pad and he can’t get it down, onto the stumps. It’s a bit of a hopeless situation when you just feel like there’s nothing you can do. You get stuck, you want to hit the ball, you can’t, you leave the stumps open, you get knocked over.”
