Watch: Rassie van der Dussen turns from part-timer to death bowler, takes wicket with second ball in international cricket

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Rassie van der Dussen, who had never bowled a single delivery in international cricket before the second ODI against Bangladesh on Sunday, picked up his first wicket for South Africa with just the second ball he sent down.

Asked to bowl the 49th over of the innings by skipper Temba Bavuma, van der Dussen, whose ESPNcricinfo player profile lists him as a leg-spinner, was bowling off-spin and started off by bowling a delivery at the middle stump, which was nudged away for a single. The very next ball, only the second of his international career, got him success, as he dismissed Shoriful Islam for an eight-ball two. The off-break delivery was smashed by the batter straight into the hands of Aiden Markram at wide long-on, who completed an easy catch to give van der Dussen his first success with the ball for South Africa. He conceded only two more runs in the remaining four balls to end the game with figures of 1-0-3-1.

Prior to the game, the 33-year-old only had 12 wickets in his professional career of 397 matches, including four scalps in 124 List A games.

Bangladesh, who won the first ODI of the series, which was also their first win in South Africa in any format, could only score 194-9 in their 50 overs in the second match, with Kagiso Rabada picking up his second ODI five-for. The Proteas went on to complete victory, having discovered a novel death-bowling option along the way.
