Temba Bavuma catch
by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: In the first T20I of the three-match series, at Durban, Temba Bavuma took a spectacular catch off Tabraiz Shamsi to dismiss Tim David.

Australia blazed away to an incredible start in the first T20I, at Kingsmead, after Aiden Markram opted to bowl. Marco Jansen snared Travis Head in the first over, but that did not deter Matthew Short (20 in 11 balls) or Mitchell Marsh as Australia reached 70-3 after the powerplay.

Marsh eventually remained unbeaten on a 49-ball 92 with 13 fours and two sixes. Coming out at 77-4 after seven overs, David blasted 64 in 28 balls with seven fours and two sixes, adding 97 in 50 balls for the fifth wicket.

South Africa desperately needed a breakthrough. That came in the 16th over, when Shamsi tossed a ball up, but kept it wide outside the off stump. David went for a straight slog, but it was slightly too wide for the shot, and the ball went up more than he had expected.

From wide long-off, Bavuma sprinted towards his right. He overran the ball before realising that it was too high for him to comfortably reach, and leapt up to intercept the ball above his head. He caught the ball and landed awkwardly, but managed to hold on.

There was little respite for the hosts, as debutant Aaron Hardie slammed a 14-ball 23. Reeza Hendricks (56 in 43 balls) and Rassie van der Dussen (21 in 11) took South Africa to 46-1 in 4.4 overs in response before they collapsed to 115 against debutant Tanveer Sangha (4-31) and Marcus Stoinis (3-18).
