South Africa have given twenty-year-old batting prodigy Dewald Brevis a maiden international call-up for the two upcoming white-ball series against Australia.

South Africa will be back in action in international cricket after a long time, having last played an ODI series against the Netherlands in April. They have three T20Is and five ODIs lined up against Australia, stretching from August 30 to September 17.

These will be their only international matches before they begin their World Cup campaign in October. They named their squads for both the T20I and ODI series against Australia on Monday (August 14).

Dewald Brevis had come into the limelight during the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, where he ended up being the highest scorer. He has now been named in both the ODI and T20I squads. Coach Rob Walter assured that South Africa would aim to ease him into the national setup as he was their “up-and-coming youngster”.

Keshav Maharaj made a surprise comeback to both squads. He ruptured his Achilles tendon this March, and there was little hope of him regaining full fitness before the World Cup. However, Maharaj’s recovery has gone better than expected and he has made a comeback just in time. The focus will now be on testing his match fitness and making a call on his World Cup participation accordingly.

South Africa have included two other uncapped players in their T20I squad: top-order batter Matthew Breetzke, and finisher Donovan Ferreira. Several first-choice ODI players, however, have been rested from the T20Is to manage their workloads ahead of the World Cup, while Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen have returned to the T20I squad.
