Hyderabad scored a massive 529-1 on day one in the 2023/24 Ranji Trophy clash against Arunachal Pradesh.

Several records were broken in the clash, with Hyderabad opener Tanmay Agarwal ending day one unbeaten on 323 in 160 deliveries. He hit 33 fours and 21 sixes at a strike rate of 201.88, the fourth-best strike rate among all batters with at least 200 runs in an innings. It is the best by an Indian batter in first-class cricket.

Tanmay broke several records during his knock, becoming the fastest to a triple ton in first-class history. He moved from 200 to 300 in only 28 balls, reaching the landmark in 147 deliveries.

Hyderabad ended the day with 529 runs in only 48 overs, scoring at close to 11 runs an over. The openers Tanmay and Rahul Singh Gahlaut (185 in 105) scored 449 for the first wicket, the fifth-best by an Indian pair in first-class cricket. Tanmay was the more aggressive batter, hitting 20 maximums and needs only four more to hit the most sixes in a single first-class innings. The record is currently with New Zealand’s Colin Munro, who smashed 23 in 2014/15 during his knock of 281 for Auckland against Central Districts.

Tanmay will now be targeting the score of 443 when he takes the field tomorrow (Saturday, January 27), to become the batter with the highest first-class score among Indians. Bhausaheb Nimbalkar holds the record currently, scoring 443* for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948. The overall record, Brian Lara’s 501* for Warwickshire in 1994, may also be within reach.

Overall, a total of 701 runs were made on the day in 87.4 overs, only the second time the 700-run mark has been breached in a single day in first-class cricket. It was the first time since 1950 that two sides combined to make over 700 in a single day’s play in the format.

Earlier, three-wicket hauls from Chama Milind and Kartikeya Kak saw Arunachal Pradesh all out for 172. Tanay Thyagrajan picked up two wickets while Elligaram Sanketh and Saaketh got one wicket each. Arunchal Pradesh opener Techi Doria carried his bat for 97.

Hyderabad have been relegated to the Plate Group after failing to win their must-win game against Delhi last year, which would have seen them keep their place in the Elite Group for this year’s Ranji Trophy.
