Watch: Abrar Ahmed outfoxed New Zealand’s makeshift opener Michael Bracewell, bowling him in the first over of the Black Caps’ attempted chase against Pakistan.

With the first Test at Karachi all but safe, Babar Azam shocked everyone with a late declaration, leaving the tourists needing 138 to win in a scheduled 15 overs. The game seemed to be meandering to a draw, but Tim Southee signalled his intent to go for an unlikely win by promoting the big-hitting Bracewell as a pinch-hitter to open the batting.

The ploy did not work as intended. Bracewell managed three runs off his first five balls before attempting some aggression, coming down the track to Abrar. The leg-spinner was too good, dragging his length back, slowing up his speed, and beating the all-rounder comprehensively, the low bounce scuttling into the stumps.

Tom Latham, demoted to No.3, was able to inject some impetus, striking three fours and a six, but was left unbeaten on 35 off 24 when bad light brought the game to a close.

Abrar has enjoyed an excellent start to his Test career, taking his second Test five-for in the first innings against New Zealand, to go with a pair of four-fors against England.
