Watch: Rehan Ahmed smashed England’s spinners for 26 off ten balls including two sixes in their warm-up match, a day after being called up to England’s Test squad for the first time.
The 18-year-old, who will become England’s youngest ever Test player if he makes his debut on their tour of Pakistan, showed his all-round credentials by carving Liam Livingstone and Will Jacks to the boundary on day two of England v England Lions in Abu Dhabi.
His first of two sixes came against Livingstone in swaggering style, advancing down the wicket and slapping the right-armer over long off, completing a flamboyant follow through.
Continuing to lay into Livingstone, he next powerfully struck a loopy delivery from the spinner back past the bowler’s outstretched right hand and down the ground for four. The Leicestershire and Southern Brave player completed his assault on Livingstone with another maximum, pummelling a flatter ball over long-on.
With Jacks next in his sights, Ahmed thumped the Surrey all-rounder over mid-off before exposing all three of his stumps to pick up another boundary in the same area.
Ahmed’s explosive cameo came to an end when he was dismissed by Livingstone, but his eye-catching innings showed the teenager’s confidence, and what England’s selectors have seen in him to justify Test selection despite limited first-class experience.
