Watch: ‘Stop the thing moving!’ – Buggy camera at midwicket fence distracts animated Steve Smith

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Steve Smith was left annoyed with the moving camera at the midwicket boundary, making his displeasure known to the umpires during the ongoing Lahore Test.

The incident took place in the 11th over of the Australia innings. Smith and Usman Khawaja were looking to rebuild after two early losses to Shaheen Shah Afridi. Having dispatched Hasan Ali through the covers off the third ball, Smith got ready to face the fourth ball. He defended a full delivery to the off-side, but his head immediately turned towards the midwicket boundary.

He could be seen pointing in that direction and complaining to the square-leg umpire about the buggy camera situated beyond the rope.

Rob Key, on-air said, “What on earth happened there? I tell you what it is, it’s the little buggy. He’s just seen that move at midwicket. How he’s seen that? I don’t know! I mean it’s on the boundary at deep midwicket. And he’s not happy. That’s what put him off, as it just moved must have been his peripheral vision.”

His co-commentator Urooj Mumtaz, added, “Well, one thing for sure: Steve Smith has the best peripheral vision.”

This was reminiscent of Stuart Broad’s anger at the roving camera during the Ashes.
