Watch: Shannon Gabriel caught on stump mic swearing at teammate after dropped catch

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

A sharp-eared viewer of the second New Zealand-West Indies Test caught touring fast bowler Shannon Gabriel venting his frustration at teammate Darren Bravo after the latter shelled a catch in the slips.

The incident occurred in the 41st over of New Zealand’s first innings. Henry Nicholls, who enjoyed something of a charmed life on day one, edged a delivery bowled by the barrel-chested West Indian, only for Bravo to put down the chance.

The scalp would have been Gabriel’s 150th in Test cricket, and the moment turned out to be a pivotal one; Nicholls, on 47 at the time, went to stumps unbeaten on 117, with New Zealand having moved from 144-3 to 294-6. Perhaps that explains Gabriel’s angry reaction, with the stump mic catching him shouting “f*** you” after the catch went down.

Gabriel didn’t have long to wait for his milestone wicket, with Will Young edging to Jason Holder at second slip on the first ball of his next over. And while he might have been frustrated, plenty of users on Twitter found mirth in his reaction, perhaps empathising after being similarly let down by a teammate.

Watch the amusing clip below. And remember to turn the sound on:
