by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: New Zealand debutant William O’Rourke finished with four wickets in his first Test innings, taking two wickets off the last two balls to end up on a hat-trick.

South Africa finished day one at 220-6. O’Rourke, who was on debut for the hosts, took the wicket of the South African captain Neil Brand on the first day, before coming back to wrap up the tail on the second.

It took New Zealand all of 8.2 overs on day two to get the remaining four wickets as they bundled South Africa over for 242. Three of those four wickets belonged to debutant O’Rourke, who finished with figures of 4-59 from 18.2 overs. In an attack comprising of Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, and Matt Henry, the 22-year-old came out with the best figures on debut.

O’Rourke got a wicket in the very first over he bowled on day two, catching the inside edge of Shaun von Berg and knocking over his stumps. Ruan de Swardt then provided the seamer with his third wicket of the innings, another chop-on as an attempted guide towards third-man ended up onto the stumps of the left-hander.

Dane Paterson, the No.11, could survive just one ball as O’Rourke followed him with a short ball, bringing out an ugly hoik from the batter that ballooned up only for Tom Latham to complete an easy catch at gully.

With two wickets off the last two balls of the innings, O’Rourke will be on a hat-trick when he first comes on to bowl in the second innings.

New Zealand would have been pleased with their effort but South Africa came back strongly with the ball, bowling the hosts out for 211, with Dane Piedt taking 5-89.
